If you thought the first Fall was nerve-wracking, wait until you see what the sequel has in store. Collider has an exclusive first look at Fall 2: Deadpoint, and it's already making our palms sweat. The 2022 original had audiences gripping their armrests as two climbers got stranded 2,000 feet up an abandoned TV tower. Now, directors Peter and Michael Spierig are taking the terror to new heights—literally.
The sequel moves from a desert tower to a massive mountain in Thailand, where two climbers find themselves trapped thousands of feet above the ground. The new images reveal a precarious wooden plank walk hugging a sheer rock face, with nothing but a vast drop below. It's the kind of visual that makes you want to look away but you can't.
A Simple Premise, A Bigger World
The Spierig Brothers, known for Jigsaw and Predestination, wanted to keep the core survival story simple. "You have characters who are trapped in an incredibly dangerous environment, and the audience immediately understands what they are trying to do and what is standing in their way," they told Collider. "The height, the isolation and the physical danger are still the heart of the movie."
But they also wanted to make the world bigger without complicating the story. The solution? A plank walk inspired by the Huashan Plank Walk in China, one of the most dangerous hikes on Earth. "Once we saw it, we knew we had the foundation for a really intense and cinematic story," they said.
Thailand's Role in the Visual Language
Shooting in Thailand allowed the directors to completely change the film's visual identity. "We didn't want to simply recreate the first movie in a different location," they explained. "We wanted the environment to feel like a character in its own right." The result is a more dramatic, immersive setting that sets Deadpoint apart from its predecessor.
Practical Filmmaking for Authentic Terror
Just like the original, the sequel relies on practical effects and real locations to sell the danger. The crew shot in a Thai rock quarry, giving them natural rock walls and textures. "We shot with almost no blue screen," the directors revealed. "We wanted the actors out in the sun, exposed to the heat and harsh environment; that authenticity really helps sell the danger and realism of the film."
The cast, including Harriet Slater (Outlander: Blood of My Blood) as Jax Hunter, Arsema Thomas (Queen Charlotte) as Luce, and Tom Brittney (Grantchester) as Jon Platt, spent hours harnessed 40 feet in the air. "The actors had to be harnessed for almost every scene on the plank walk," the directors said. "It was tough, but for all the right reasons."
The directors also encouraged the cast to perform their own stunts whenever possible. "Any time the actors did their own stunts, it brought so much to the sequences and gave us a huge amount to work with in the editing room," they said.
