Apple TV+'s beloved British sitcom Trying has quietly become one of the streamer's most consistent gems, and Season 5 is proving why. The show, which follows Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) through the ups and downs of adoption and parenting, continues to earn rave reviews—including a 9/10 from Collider that called it "one of the best-written, best-acted, and most emotionally rewarding comedies on television." Season 5 throws new challenges at the couple, starting with the arrival of Princess and Tyler's birth mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), at the end of last season. In an exclusive clip from Episode 3, titled "The Mousetrap," we see Jason trying to bond with his younger classmates over drinks. But it's not the night out he remembers from his own college days. Everyone is glued to their phones, no one wants a pint, and self-care seems to be the priority over actual fun. Jason delivers a blunt wake-up call: "Unless you want to die alone at 103, surrounded by your gut bacteria." His point is driven home when a student puts on sunglasses for a "daylight cutoff time." Eventually, his harsh lesson works, and the group agrees to a phone-free night of treating their bodies "more like rental cars than temples."
This scene is a perfect example of how Trying blends humor with heartfelt moments. Jason's attempt to relive his glory days is both funny and a little sad, but it also shows his growth as a character who's trying to connect with a new generation.
New Faces and Familiar Talent
Season 5 expands the cast significantly, bringing in Celia Imrie (The Thursday Murder Club), Phil Davis, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Colin Morgan, Danielle Vitalis, and Leah Brotherhead. Returning BAFTA winner Darren Boyd and nominee Siân Brooke also reprise their roles. The music continues to be a highlight, with Ivor Novello-winning artist Orla Gartland debuting new tracks each episode.
