Creator and writer Sophie Goodhart—known for her work on Sex Education and Rivals—sat down with us to spill the tea on how a friend's dating life sparked the show's delightfully awkward premise.
"I love writing intergenerational stuff," Goodhart shared. "I was talking to a single male friend about how he's dating younger, and I just thought, 'Oh my God, imagine if a friend went out with someone's daughter.'" That spark of curiosity quickly snowballed into a full-blown series, with Goodhart pitching the idea just a week after it first hit her—before she'd even written a word.
The show follows Alice and Steve as they navigate a relationship that's equal parts sweet and cringe-worthy, with family dynamics complicating every step. Goodhart emphasized that the series is entirely character-driven, not plot-heavy. "I write a draft from each character's point of view—the Alice pass, the Steve pass, the Izzy pass," she explained. "I love the idea of the audience discovering they're rooting for a different character each time."
Casting proved transformative. Once Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement signed on, Goodhart rewrote with them in mind, letting their unique energies shape the story. "Having Nicola in my head while writing was so helpful," she said. "Then Jermaine came in, and the characters really evolved."
This marks Goodhart's first solo writing project, a nerve-wracking but exhilarating experience. "It's been so exciting to see it all come together," she added. The result is a messy, heartfelt rom-com that feels fresh and unpredictable—perfect for fans of Prime Video's 'Off Campus' or anyone craving a love story that doesn't play it safe.
