Ethan Hawke has quietly added a surprising role to his already impressive resume: the voice of Batman. While many fans might associate the actor with indie dramas or horror hits like Black Phone, his turn as the Caped Crusader in Cartoon Network's Batwheels is a delightful twist. And now, the series is getting a major streaming push: Season 3C of Batwheels arrives on HBO Max on May 22, 2026.
Batwheels is a preschool-friendly animated series with a unique premise: the Batcomputer decides Batman needs more help, so it brings his entire fleet of vehicles to life. The show focuses on the adventures of the Batmobile (voiced by Jacob Bertrand) and his fellow sentient cars, but Batman himself is a key presence. Hawke's performance strikes a balance between the gravitas of Kevin Conroy and the playful charm of Adam West, making the Dark Knight both cool and accessible for young viewers.
Creator Michael G. Stern emphasized that the team was careful not to dilute Batman's essence. "For us, because we were also asked to really respect the character of Batman, the first decision was keeping Batman cool, not kiddifying him, not dumbing him down," Stern said. "The only thing Batman doesn't do on our show is punch people in the face." This approach ensures that longtime fans can enjoy the series alongside their kids.
The show also shines a spotlight on underused DC characters. Duke Thomas (voiced by A.J. Hudson) takes on the role of Robin, and Cassandra Cain (voiced by Leah Lewis) appears as Batgirl. Both characters have rich comic histories but rarely get the mainstream attention they deserve. Batwheels introduces them to a new generation, giving them the prominence they've long earned.
Batman's rogues' gallery also gets a vehicular makeover. The Riddler's helicopter, Quiz, shares his love for puzzles, while the Joker's van, Prank, is as chaotic as its owner. These creative twists keep the spirit of the villains intact while fitting the show's car-centric world.
Interestingly, Batwheels isn't Hawke's first brush with the Batman franchise. He was originally offered the role of Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever but turned it down, leading to Val Kilmer taking the part. Hawke later expressed regret, saying, "I just didn't want to go to the Knicks game and have everybody go, 'Wow, you were a great Batman!' That wasn't my goal in life. Now I wish I'd done it, because I could have used it to do other things." Decades later, he's finally donned the cowl—albeit vocally—and it's a full-circle moment that fans can appreciate.
For those who want to see more of Hawke's recent work, his horror sequel Black Phone 2 hits Netflix in May 2026. And if you're curious about other underrated Batman performances, check out our piece on why Val Kilmer's Batman Forever portrayal deserves more love.
Batwheels is currently streaming on HBO Max, with new episodes arriving May 22, 2026. It's a charming, action-packed series that proves Batman can work for any age—especially when he's got a talking Batmobile by his side.
