Four seasons in, Elsbeth continues to attract an impressive roster of guest stars, and the upcoming episode is no exception. The CBS procedural, starring Carrie Preston as the delightfully quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni, has welcomed everyone from Nathan Lane to Steve Buscemi. Now, Season 4 is stacking the deck with a theater-themed mystery that brings together a Succession favorite, a Broadway-bound newcomer, and a 13 Reasons Why alum.
In an exclusive sneak peek for Episode 2, titled "Death of a Playwright," we meet Nelson Thibodeau (Isaac Powell), a young, rising "theater maker" whose latest play has just earned rave reviews. The clip opens with Nelson basking in congratulations from a trio of theater insiders: Jeremy Perrick (Nicholas Braun), the overlooked son of a famous playwright; Jeremy's mother, Sheila (Betsy Aidem); and Lenny Swift (Richard Thomas), a seasoned producer. Nelson gleefully announces that his show is moving to the famed Lucille Lortel Theatre, a major career milestone.
But not everyone is thrilled. Jeremy, played by Braun with a simmering resentment, clearly feels overshadowed by his father's legacy and Nelson's sudden success. The tension is palpable, and it only escalates when Tommy Dorfman's character, rival playwright Klea Zane, storms in and publicly accuses Nelson of plagiarism. The accusation sends shockwaves through the gathering, setting the stage for a murder investigation that will have Elsbeth navigating the cutthroat world of New York theater.
Adding to the star power, NBA champion OG Anunoby makes a cameo as himself, offering Nelson courtside tickets—a moment that only deepens Jeremy's envy. The episode also features John Doman as Jeremy's legendary father, Richard Perrick, and Emmy-winning theater journalist Frank DiLella as himself. With six guest stars and two special appearances, this is shaping up to be one of the most packed episodes in the series' history.
This week's mystery follows the Season 4 premiere, which featured Tony winner Nicole Scherzinger as a marriage counselor with a hidden dark side. If you missed that episode, you can catch up with our review of the premiere. And for those new to the show, our Season 3 recap will get you up to speed on Elsbeth's quirky detective work.
Meanwhile, Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce) is dealing with his own pressures, as the new mayor and commissioner demand he curb the city's rising murder rate—all while budget cuts loom. It's a lot for Elsbeth to juggle, but she's never one to back down from a challenge.
Looking ahead, Season 4 has a slew of exciting guest stars lined up, including Lea Michele, Sam Richardson, Jemima Kirke, and Nat Faxon. With such a diverse array of talent, the season promises to keep viewers on their toes.
