The wait is over for Lord of the Rings fans eager to see more of Middle-earth's rich history. The Rings of Power Season 3 is set to introduce a character who has been conspicuously absent from live-action adaptations: Elros, the twin brother of Elrond and the first king of Númenor.
Just weeks after the confirmation that Celeborn, Galadriel's long-lost husband, would appear, the showrunners have dropped another bombshell. According to an exclusive report, actor Robert Aramayo will pull double duty, portraying both Elrond and his mortal twin Elros. The character appears in a flashback scene, where he tells Elrond of his choice to embrace mortality—a decision that would shape the fate of Men forever.
The new season picks up five years after the catastrophic events of Season 2, during the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron. With the Dark Lord actively recruiting men to become Nazgûl, Elrond embarks on a crucial mission to Númenor, seeking aid against the growing threat. It's during this journey that he reflects on his brother's legacy.
Showrunner J.D. Payne explained the emotional weight of this flashback: "Elrond has always carried deep sorrow over losing his closest kin. Visiting Númenor allows him to metaphorically walk a mile in his brother's shoes and see another part of Elros." In Númenor, Elrond witnesses the civilization that grew from a dream his brother once shared with him in the quiet of the woods—a poignant reminder of the path not taken.
For those unfamiliar with Tolkien lore, Elros and Elrond are half-elven, given the choice to live as immortal elves or mortal men. Elrond chose immortality, while Elros chose mortality, becoming the first king of Númenor and founding a lineage that would eventually produce Aragorn. Despite his importance, Elros has never appeared in Peter Jackson's film trilogies, making his introduction here a significant moment for fans.
The first-look image, released by Polygon, shows Aramayo as Elros in a tender moment with his brother, capturing the gravity of their parting. The scene is set before Elrond's present-day journey, serving as a memory that informs his decisions.
This isn't the first time the show has hinted at Elros. A tapestry in Season 1 subtly referenced him, but now he steps into the spotlight. The showrunners, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, have been building toward this reveal, and it promises to add a new layer to Elrond's character.
As the war against Sauron intensifies, Elrond's connection to Númenor becomes more critical. The flashback not only deepens his personal story but also sets the stage for the island kingdom's pivotal role in the coming conflict.
For those eager to revisit the earlier seasons, the first two seasons are getting a Blu-ray release in December 2026. And if you're counting down the days, Season 3 premieres November 11, 2026, with the first four episodes dropping at once, followed by two more on November 18 and the final two on November 25.
Stay tuned for more updates as the premiere approaches. This is shaping up to be the most emotionally resonant season yet.
