There's nothing quite like a cold pint shared with family after a day on the links, and Edward Burns is capturing that warm, competitive spirit in his latest directorial effort, Finnegan's Foursome. The sports comedy-drama follows two Irish-American brothers and their adult children as they embark on a golfing trip to Ireland to honor their father's final request. Burns, who broke out with the 1995 indie hit The Brothers McMullen, is returning to the family dramedy formula that made him a name, blending rivalry with the unbreakable bonds of love.
In an exclusive first look from the film, Burns (as Freddy Finnegan) and Brian d'Arcy James (as Teddy Finnegan) are seen sharing a pint of Guinness in a cozy pub, presumably with their kids nearby. The image radiates the joy of a day well spent, hinting at the heartwarming tale beneath the competitive surface. The brothers, sons of legendary golf pro Jack Finnegan (Ian McElhinney), have long been rivals on the green. Their father's wish to have his ashes scattered at his beloved coastal course and to continue the traditional Finnegan's Cup initially stirs up old grudges. But as their misadventures unfold, bickering gives way to bonding, and they realize why their dad wanted them to keep playing together.
Burns is no stranger to blending humor and heart. His 1995 breakout The Brothers McMullen set the template for Irish-American family dramedies, and he's continued to explore those themes in films like Millers in Marriage (2024) and last year's The Family McMullen reunion. Finnegan's Foursome marks his first film shot abroad and his return to the Tribeca Festival after 15 years. He previously closed out the festival in 2011 with Newlyweds. The film will screen at Tribeca on June 7 before hitting digital platforms on June 19.
Beyond directing, Burns is recognizable for his role in Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, while James has appeared in Spielberg's West Side Story, the Best Picture-winning Spotlight, and the spy thriller series The Copenhagen Test. They're joined by Erica Hernández and Brian Muller in the cast.
For fans of underrated gems, Finnegan's Foursome promises to be a warm, funny tale about family, patience, and the joy of a shared pint. Check out the exclusive image above and stay tuned for more from our summer preview series.
