Even though Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone rode off into the sunset two years ago, the Dutton legacy is far from over. The franchise has expanded with spin-offs following John Dutton's kids, and now Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) are building a new life in Rio Paloma, Texas, on their own series, Dutton Ranch. But starting over isn't easy—especially when a devastating disaster wipes out their cattle herd, forcing them to team up with rival Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) to keep things afloat.
Enter Zachariah Moss, played by Marc Menchaca, a new ranch hand with a heavy secret. In a recent interview, Menchaca revealed how learning Zachariah's backstory just before filming changed everything for him. “It changed everything,” he said. “I found that out right before we started shooting. When Chad [Feehan] and Christina [Alexandra Voros] told me, that was the one bit of information I needed.”
Zachariah's past involves a tragic spiral: he came from nothing, fell in love with Terry Jane, and built a family—only to lose it all in a moment of anger and alcohol. That confession comes during a quiet fireside scene in Episode 4, where he opens up to Rip and the other ranch hands. Menchaca explains that this moment is a turning point for the group. “I think it's hard to crack that shell of Rip,” he says. “For years, Zach has dealt with the consequences, but facing judgment in person is different from group therapy in prison. That moment changed the dynamic of our group.”
One of the most touching scenes in the season so far is a one-on-one between Zachariah and Beth, where she asks him to call her by her first name. Menchaca says it was a welcome moment of grace. “She's such a badass and a hardass a lot of the time. For her to tell him to quit calling her ma'am, and saying her dad would have liked me—it was almost like a welcome home. Zach doesn't have anything, so he's completely dependent on this family.”
Menchaca and Reilly have known each other for years, and both are eager to work together more. “We've known each other for a very long time,” he says. “The scene that came together felt like a moment of grace with her character.”
Looking ahead to Episode 6, viewers can expect a friendly roping competition between the Dutton Ranch and 10-Petal Ranch hands. Menchaca spent hours practicing to make it authentic. “We were just out roping on all of our days off,” he laughs. The result is a tense, fun showdown that showcases the growing camaraderie among the ranch hands.
For fans of the Yellowstone universe, Dutton Ranch continues to deliver the same blend of family drama, rugged landscapes, and emotional depth. And with characters like Zachariah, the show proves that even in the face of tragedy, new bonds can form—and old wounds can begin to heal.
