Prime Video's romantic thriller Drawn Together (originally Enfrentados: Marfil) left viewers on a knife's edge with its cliffhanger ending. Now, stars Ester Expósito and Hugo Diego García are opening up about what's next for Marfil and Sebastian in the sequel, Drawn Apart (or Enfrentados: Ébano), promising a story that's "darker and more extreme."
Based on Mercedes Ron's novel, the film follows Marfil Cortés (Expósito), the daughter of a Spanish tycoon, who is kidnapped and then released without explanation. Her father assigns bodyguard Sebastian Moore (García) to protect her, but Marfil insists on living her life and even demands he teach her to fight. As they train, their walls crumble, and a dangerous attraction ignites.
In a recent interview, the co-stars shared their excitement about the cliffhanger. "We love it because I feel like we're stopping right at the peak of the movie with the best moment," García said. Expósito agreed, adding, "Our favorite part is the ending of the first movie. We love how it ends and how it leaves everything hanging in the air."
The sequel, they tease, raises the stakes dramatically. "Everything is so much darker and more extreme," Expósito noted. García added, "The stakes are higher and it's more intense. The pace is quicker." Expósito promised, "People are going to love and won't expect that level of action and thriller."
One of the film's biggest twists involves Sebastian's secret connection to Marfil's kidnapping. Expósito admitted it was challenging to understand Marfil's quick forgiveness. "I think things are so quick and intense and extreme at that moment," she explained. "In the end, she has love for him and I think she understands that it started as a job. It wasn't personal." García found the secret compelling from an actor's perspective: "Playing a secret is acting inside an acting role... It's interesting."
Expósito also discussed the ballet scenes, which she performed with limited rehearsal time. "Ballet is so difficult. I wish I could have more time to prepare," she said. She revealed that a dance scene in her apartment was improvised on set. "It was my idea to put that song, and I just improvised that choreography on the day," she said, adding that she's more comfortable with Latin rhythms like salsa and bachata.
The physicality of the fight training also helped build chemistry between the leads. "It really helped both the actors and the characters," García said. The offscreen training translated into the onscreen tension between Marfil and Sebastian.
As for what's next, both actors are looking ahead. Expósito is eager to explore more diverse roles, while García is drawn to complex characters with hidden depths. Fans of Drawn Together can look forward to the sequel, which promises to deliver even more thrills and romance.
