Denzel Washington may be done with The Equalizer for now, but he’s not done with high-stakes crime dramas. The two-time Oscar winner has signed on to star in an untitled original crime thriller from Christopher McQuarrie, the director behind the recent Mission: Impossible films. The project has just been greenlit at United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios, with a release date already locked in for October 1, 2027.

According to Deadline, the film will center on a former police detective who is serving a life sentence when he receives a devastating diagnosis: terminal brain cancer. Granted compassionate release, he has six months to live and decides to spend that time reconnecting with his estranged daughter and meeting the grandson he never knew he had. But making amends proves complicated when his dark past comes back to collect its due.

Russell Crowe's 'A Beautiful Mind' Returns to Theaters for 25th Anniversary
Russell Crowe's acclaimed 2001 drama 'A Beautiful Mind' returns to theaters for two nights in November 2026, celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special big-screen event.

The script comes from Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner, the writing team behind Into the Dark and Edge of Fear. Their involvement suggests a story that balances gritty thrills with genuine emotional weight—a combination that has become a hallmark of Washington’s recent work.

Washington has been busy lining up a diverse slate of projects. He’s set to appear in the heist film The Take (formerly titled Here Comes the Flood) alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones next year. He also recently teamed with Spike Lee on the acclaimed Highest 2 Lowest, further cementing his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile leading men.

As for The Equalizer franchise, fans shouldn’t lose hope. In 2024, Washington told Esquire that a fourth and fifth installment were in development, though no release dates have been announced. For now, his focus seems to be on this new McQuarrie project, which pairs him with one of the most successful action directors of the modern era.

McQuarrie is best known for his work on Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, as well as writing Top Gun: Maverick. His knack for crafting tense, character-driven set pieces should mesh well with Washington’s commanding screen presence. The collaboration has already generated significant buzz among industry insiders.

While plot details beyond the logline are being kept under wraps, the premise alone promises a powerful dramatic turn for Washington. It’s a role that echoes the moral complexity of his work in Training Day and Fences, while also offering the kind of visceral action that McQuarrie delivers so well.

Production is expected to begin sometime in 2026, ahead of the October 2027 release. With Washington and McQuarrie joining forces, this untitled thriller is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the decade. For fans of intense crime dramas, it’s a pairing that feels like a perfect match.
