David Boreanaz is adding another iconic TV role to his résumé. The Bones and SEAL Team star has officially landed a series order at NBC for his reboot of the classic 1970s detective drama The Rockford Files. The show is set to debut this fall, marking Boreanaz's latest leading-man turn in a career that has spanned decades.
In this updated take, Boreanaz steps into the role of Jim Rockford, a man fresh out of prison after being wrongfully convicted for a crime he didn't commit. Now back in Los Angeles, he's trying to rebuild his life as a private investigator—only to find himself caught in a dangerous tug-of-war between law enforcement and organized crime. The premise stays true to the original's blend of gritty crime-solving and personal stakes, but with a modern edge.
The cast is stacked with talent. Michaela McManus (9-1-1: Lone Star) plays Kate, an LAPD detective who once had a romantic relationship with Rockford—until he accused her fellow officers of framing him. Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) brings her Oscar-nominated gravitas as Rockford's trailer-park neighbor, a seasoned activist. Felix Solis (The Rookie) rounds out the core trio as Nitty, a crusading defense attorney who also happens to be Rockford's best friend.
For those unfamiliar with the original, The Rockford Files premiered as a TV movie in spring 1974 before launching as a regular series that fall. It ran for six seasons and spawned eight reunion TV movies in the 1990s. James Garner starred as the original Jim Rockford, a former con man turned PI who drove a gold Pontiac Firebird Esprit and often found himself in high-speed chases—many of which Garner performed himself. The series was created by Roy Huggins (Maverick) and Stephen J. Cannell (The A-Team), and it served as an early writing credit for future Sopranos creator David Chase.
This reboot has been in the works for a while, and fans of Boreanaz—who has a knack for anchoring long-running hits—are eager to see how he channels Garner's charm while making the role his own. The show joins NBC's fall lineup, though an exact premiere date has yet to be announced.
