The Setup: A Life Split in Two
We first meet Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) as a contented physics professor in Chicago, married to his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and raising their teenage son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). But that idyllic existence shatters when a masked stranger kidnaps him. When Jason wakes up, he's in a world where he never married Daniela—and the kidnapper is none other than an alternate version of himself. This other Jason (let's call him Jason 2) has built a device called The Box, capable of hopping between parallel universes. Season 1 follows our Jason as he fights to return to his reality. He teams up with psychiatrist Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga), and together they use The Box to navigate a labyrinth of worlds. Each stop is more nightmarish than the last: a Chicago ravaged by fire, a planet locked in eternal winter, and a desolate wasteland overrun by terrifying bird-insect hybrids. As they refine their technique, they eventually learn to target specific universes. Amanda finds a utopian world she wants to stay in, while Jason presses on alone. The Season 1 finale is a masterclass in escalation. Jason finally makes it back to his own world, only to discover that dozens of his own copies have also arrived—each a version of him that branched off during his travels. Some are hardened by horrors, others desperate, but all want the same thing: to reunite with Daniela and Charlie. In one of the eeriest scenes of the series, a crowd of Jasons collectively agrees to let the original (the one we've been following) take his family into The Box.
