Dan Stevens, the actor who has seamlessly transitioned from period drama to action hero, is set to lead the charge in a new sci-fi thriller that's already generating buzz. Onslaught, directed by Adam Wingard, has officially locked in a theatrical release for September 2026, promising a high-octane blend of genetic experimentation and maternal fury.
Stevens, who first captured audiences as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, has since carved out a niche in genre fare. His breakout action role came in 2014's The Guest, and he's since appeared in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast and the Ridley Scott-produced horror series The Terror: Devil in Silver. Most recently, he's been announced as the new RoboCop for Prime Video's reboot, and he's set to reprise his role as Trapper in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, due in 2027.
For Onslaught, Wingard steps away from the MonsterVerse to craft a more intimate, yet equally explosive, story. The film also stars Adria Arjona, known for her role in Andor, and Rebecca Hall, who appeared in Wingard's last two MonsterVerse movies. The cast is rounded out by Drew Starkey and Alex Pereira.
The official synopsis sets the stage: "When a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers break loose in the desert, a badass Army sniper must unleash hell to protect her young daughter." It's a premise that promises relentless action and a deeply personal stakes, a combination that has already earned the film a 74% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 46 reviews.
Wingard conceived the story himself and brought in Simon Barrett to pen the script. The production took place over a few months, from November 2024 to January 2025, suggesting a tight, focused shoot that could translate into a lean, mean thriller.
For Stevens, this is another feather in a cap that's already brimming with diverse roles. He's also set to appear in the second season of Dexter: Resurrection on Paramount+, taking over the villain role from Peter Dinklage. With Onslaught on the horizon, Stevens continues to prove he's one of the most versatile actors working today.
As the release date approaches, fans of sci-fi and action can mark their calendars. Onslaught is poised to be a standout entry in the genre, blending high-concept science fiction with the raw, visceral energy that Wingard is known for.
