This afternoon, Disney dropped the first teaser for Coven Academy, a fantasy drama that's set to premiere on Freeform on October 1 at 8 PM, then hit Disney+ and Hulu the following day. The show comes from Tim Federle, the creative mind behind High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and he's also penning the upcoming Romy and Michele sequel. With that pedigree, fans can expect a mix of heart, humor, and supernatural intrigue.
Meet the Coven
The series follows a group of young witches and warlocks at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans. Leading the cast is Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she's a witch. She's joined by Malachi Barton as Jake, a magnetic warlock with a dangerous edge; Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, an empathic student who can read minds; Ora Duplass as Tegan, an irreverent time-bending witch; Louis Thresher as Ollie, a newly turned vampire with a hunger; and Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves, the formidable and glamorous head of the school. Devon Sawa also pops in as Mr. Cole, a charismatic warlock professor.
The teaser, set to Olivia Rodrigo's hit "Brutal," hints at tension within the budding coven, with mysteries swirling around Briar's past and Jake's dangerous ambitions. The official synopsis teases a world where "power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability," as the young witches navigate ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests.
This new series arrives as Disney continues to lean into witch-themed storytelling, following the success of Agatha All Along and WandaVision. While those shows were one-season affairs, Coven Academy looks to carve its own path in the streaming landscape.
