When CBS announced NCIS: New York earlier this year, fans of the long-running NCIS: Los Angeles immediately wondered if Sam Hanna would get a visit from his old partner, Grisha Callen. Now, Chris O'Donnell has weighed in on the possibility, and his answer is music to fans' ears.
Speaking exclusively to Collider at the Disney upfront for his new procedural 9-1-1: Nashville, O'Donnell revealed he's more than open to reuniting with LL Cool J on the new spin-off. "Any opportunity to spend time with Todd is something I would do," he said, using LL Cool J's real name. "We'll see. Callen's still out there somewhere."
The NCIS: Los Angeles series finale saw Callen marry Anna, with Sam Hanna serving as best man, before the duo rode off into the sunset together. That open-ended conclusion leaves plenty of room for a crossover, especially since NCIS: New York will follow Hanna as he builds a new team in the Big Apple. The show will also reunite some Los Angeles talent behind the scenes, with R. Scott Gemmill—who wrote all 14 seasons of the California-based spin-off—penning the pilot and Byron Balasco serving as showrunner.
While O'Donnell is enthusiastic about the idea, his schedule is packed. 9-1-1: Nashville was recently renewed for a second season, and O'Donnell is focused on deepening the dynamics of his firefighting family. "I'm excited to continue building on what we already started," he said. "It always takes a while to get these shows up and running. The characters need to find their voices."
For now, fans will have to wait and see if Callen makes a cameo. But with O'Donnell's blessing and the creative team's history, a reunion feels more likely than ever. NCIS: New York premieres this fall on CBS, while 9-1-1: Nashville returns to ABC on Thursdays.
