In Netflix's gripping new thriller I Will Find You, Chi McBride and Logan Browning play a father-daughter police duo whose strained relationship is tested as they hunt down escaped convict David Burroughs (Sam Worthington). The show's emotional core rests on their chemistry, and in a recent interview, the actors opened up about how they built that bond—and revealed a key scene they shot in two completely different ways.

Building an Authentic Father-Daughter Dynamic

McBride, known for his roles in The Terminal and Pushing Daisies, and Browning, who starred in Dear White People and The Perfection, didn't rely on extensive backstory sessions. Instead, they let their natural rapport develop on set. Browning shared that she imagined her character, Sarah, grew up watching her father prioritize his FBI career over family, which fueled her own drive to join the force. “She's like, ‘This thing was so good that it took you from me. I gotta know what's so great about this career,’” Browning explained.

HBO's adaptation of Philip Pullman's fantasy trilogy is seeing a streaming resurgence on iTunes in June 2026. Here's why it's worth your time.

McBride recalled a memorable first meeting: “The first time I ever saw this woman in my life, I was going to my trailer, getting ready to do our first day of work together, and I see her, and I say, ‘Well, well, well, if it ain't my daughter.’ She walks up to me and looks at me like this and says, ‘I'm not calling you dad’ and walks away with a huge eye-roll. Less than a week later, she's bringing me hot tea.” That playful tension evolved into a genuine on-screen connection.

The Scene They Shot Two Ways

The duo revealed that one pivotal scene—a tense confrontation between their characters—was filmed in two dramatically different versions. In one take, the scene was played with raw anger and hostility; in the other, it was understated and vulnerable. “We wanted to see which emotional beat felt truer to the moment,” Browning said. “It was a luxury to have that creative freedom.” The final cut, they noted, blends elements of both approaches, capturing the complexity of their fractured relationship.

McBride also shared a lesson he learned from Stanley Tucci while filming The Terminal: “Stanley taught me that sometimes the smallest reaction—a glance, a pause—can say more than a big speech. That stuck with me, and I brought that to this show.”

Why I Will Find You Stands Out

The series, based on Harlan Coben's novel, follows David Burroughs as he escapes prison to uncover the truth about his son's murder. As Sarah and her father close in on him, their own unresolved issues come to the surface. The show's blend of suspense and family drama has drawn comparisons to other Coben adaptations like The Stranger and Stay Close.

For fans of the genre, I Will Find You offers a fresh take on the father-daughter dynamic within a crime thriller. As Browning put it, “When you don't overthink things and use what comes naturally, that's what makes for satisfying performances.”

All episodes of I Will Find You are now streaming on Netflix.
