Fans of The Rookie have been on edge since Season 8 ended with a cliffhanger that left beloved couple Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford—aka Chenford—in grave danger. With Season 9 not arriving until 2027, the wait could feel endless. But showrunner Alexi Hawley has thrown viewers a lifeline: an extended cut of Season 8, Episode 10, now streaming on Hulu, packed with fresh content that deepens the story.
The supersized version of "His Name Was Martin" adds five and a half minutes of never-before-seen footage, accessible via the Extras tab on the show's Hulu page. The episode itself is a tense thriller set in an abandoned hospital overrun by people accidentally poisoned by a chemical agent, turning them into zombie-like attackers. John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil), and Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) fight for survival as they're chased through the eerie grounds.
One of the extended scenes amplifies the horror: Harper spots a body on the floor and moves to investigate, but a wider shot reveals someone watching her from the shadows. The added perspective cranks up the unease, leading to a sudden, terrifying attack. It's a small but effective tweak that makes the episode even more gripping.
But the real treat for Chenford devotees is an additional scene between Lucy and Tim (Eric Winter). In the original episode, Tim's concern for Lucy's safety is hinted at, but the new footage shows him explicitly voicing his dread. Hawley has called this scene "the hardest to cut" from the original broadcast, noting it perfectly sets up the foreboding that follows. Now restored, it offers invaluable insight into Chenford's dynamic. Despite Tim's efforts to maintain professionalism at work, his protective instincts toward Lucy are undeniable. The added dialogue underscores his desire to keep her safe and aware of the job's risks—even when he can't prevent the inevitable. By episode's end, his prediction comes true, but he's powerless to stop it, a chilling realization for him.
This foreshadowing pays off in the Season 8 finale. Just when Chenford seems poised for happiness, they're drugged and kidnapped by the minions of mega-villain Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), who seeks revenge on the LAPD. The couple's fate hangs in the balance, leaving fans desperate for answers. Hawley has revealed that the Season 9 premiere script is already written, describing it as "super fun and romantic and emotional [with] a lot of action."
While waiting for the new season, this extended episode is a gift—and it might not be the last. Hulu could release more bonus footage to tide fans over.
