Stephen King's debut novel has haunted readers for decades, and now it's found a new home on television. Mike Flanagan's eight-episode adaptation for Prime Video gives Carrie White more screen time than ever before, letting audiences live with her struggles long before prom night's infamous chaos. Starring Summer H. Howell as the telekinetic teen and Samantha Sloyan as her fiercely protective mother, the series dropped on October 7, just in time for Halloween marathons.
The show boasts a stacked ensemble, including Amber Midthunder, Matthew Lillard, Siena Agudong, and Josie Totah. Howell steps into a role previously immortalized by Sissy Spacek and Chloë Grace Moretz, but she's making it her own. With all eight episodes now streaming, fans are already wondering: will there be a second season?
At the Newport Beach Film Festival, Howell chatted with Collider and offered an exclusive update. When asked about the possibility of more episodes, she said, "I've heard things. I'm waiting on Amazon to say whether we get one or not, but yeah, no, Mike's got many ideas, and they're all very exciting." Flanagan has previously mentioned a three-season vision, but that plan hinges on a renewal from the streaming giant.
For now, Amazon hasn't given the green light, so there's no release date for a potential follow-up. But Howell's enthusiasm suggests the creative team is ready to dive back in if given the chance. The first season stands alone as a complete story, yet it leaves plenty of threads dangling for a continuation.
Howell also revealed that she approached the role without revisiting earlier adaptations. "Well, I hadn't seen Carrie before. I hadn't read the book," she admitted. That fresh perspective allowed her to build a Carrie White who feels both new and faithful to King's original vision. She credited Flanagan for reimagining the mother-daughter dynamic: "Mike wrote our relationship to be based on love from the start, and so that just changes our characters fundamentally from the very beginning, and she's got this... Protectiveness."
That shift in tone sets this version apart. Instead of pure horror, the series explores the tragic bond between Carrie and Margaret, making the eventual violence all the more devastating. Sloyan, a Flanagan regular from Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, brings a layered intensity to Margaret that's both terrifying and heartbreaking.
