In the vast galaxy of Star Wars, goodbyes are rarely permanent. But Lucasfilm has always been careful when it comes to characters whose actors have passed away, especially when those performers became inseparable from their roles. That's why the return of Greef Karga in a new comic feels so meaningful—and so respectful.
Two years after Carl Weathers died at age 76, his fan-favorite character Greef Karga has officially re-entered Star Wars canon. The comeback happens in The Mandalorian & Grogu – Danger in the Dark, a prequel comic released by Mad Cave, Papercutz, and Disney. Importantly, Lucasfilm didn't recast the role or use digital technology to recreate Weathers; instead, they let the character live on through the written page.
The comic serves as a direct lead-in to the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu. It finds Karga alive and well on Nevarro, still serving as High Magistrate and maintaining his close friendship with Din Djarin and the Force-sensitive child everyone loves. He's even still handing out missions, sending Mando and his young apprentice to deal with a dangerous situation beneath the planet's surface.
What Happened to Greef Karga After 'The Mandalorian'?
The story picks up after the assault by Gorian Shard in Season 3. Scans reveal that one of the pirate ships destroyed during the battle was carrying armed torpedoes in underground lava tubes. Karga dispatches Din, Grogu, and the Anzellans to disarm them, setting the stage for Mando's eventual encounter with Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver.
Weathers became an integral part of The Mandalorian after Greef Karga was originally conceived as a much smaller role. He appeared throughout all three seasons and even stepped behind the camera, directing the Season 2 episode “The Siege” and Season 3’s “The Foundling.” Lucasfilm also included a tribute to the actor in The Mandalorian & Grogu: Aurebesh text in the movie translates to “Weathers Apollo,” honoring both Weathers and his iconic Rocky character Apollo Creed.
For fans who want to see more of Greef Karga, The Mandalorian & Grogu – Danger in the Dark is available now. It's a fitting tribute to an actor who brought warmth, humor, and gravitas to the Star Wars universe.
