It's been a long road, but Captain Jonathan Archer is finally making his way back into the Star Trek universe. The beloved captain of the first starship Enterprise, portrayed by Scott Bakula, is set to return in a brand-new expansion for the popular card game Star Trek Fluxx, just in time for the franchise's 60th anniversary.
Archer, who led the NX-01 Enterprise in the 22nd century, was a pivotal figure in Star Trek lore. His adventures predated the United Federation of Planets, and his efforts helped unite humanity with Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites, eventually leading to the formation of the Federation. After his retirement, he even served as its first president. Despite the show's initial mixed reviews and cancellation after four seasons, Star Trek: Enterprise has gained a dedicated fanbase over the years, and Bakula has expressed interest in revisiting the role.
Now, that return is happening in a unique way. Looney Labs, the creator of the Fluxx card game series, is producing a limited-edition reprint of its four Star Trek Fluxx games to celebrate the franchise's 60th anniversary, which began in fall 1966. The reprints include sets based on The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, along with a new set inspired by Lower Decks. But the spotlight is on Archer, who headlines a new Enterprise-themed expansion focusing on the show's Temporal Cold War storyline.
This expansion, simply called the Archer Expansion, will feature cards for Archer, temporal agent Daniels, the alien Xindi, and more. Another Enterprise-themed set, the Portos Expansion, pays tribute to Archer's faithful beagle. Both expansions, along with all other Fluxx sets, are available for pre-order on LooneyLabs.com.
What Is the Temporal Cold War?
For those unfamiliar, the Temporal Cold War was a conflict between various time-traveling factions, each vying for control over the past, present, and future. Archer and his crew first became entangled when they encountered a mysterious figure working with the shapeshifting Suliban. Later, another faction convinced the Xindi that humanity would destroy them in the future, leading to a devastating attack on Earth. Archer managed to thwart a second attack, and the war eventually ended with a ban on time travel technology. However, as seen in Star Trek: Discovery, at least one veteran of the conflict, Kovich (played by David Cronenberg), was still active in the 31st century.
This expansion is a treat for longtime fans who have been waiting for Archer's return, and it's a fitting way to honor the franchise's legacy. While it's not a live-action comeback, it's a nostalgic nod to one of Star Trek's most underrated captains.
