DC Studios co-head James Gunn has once again taken to social media to clear the air, this time reassuring fans that the Blue Beetle animated series is very much alive. The confirmation comes amid a wave of project cancellations and swirling speculation that the show had been quietly shelved.
Over the past few weeks, DC has announced the scrapping of several projects that were initially teased when Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their ambitious "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate back in 2023. With so much upheaval, it's no wonder fans started to wonder if the Blue Beetle series had fallen victim to the same fate. But Gunn was quick to set the record straight.
On social media, a fan directly asked Gunn whether the animated show had been canceled after a content creator's video claimed otherwise. Gunn responded by reminding everyone that he had already addressed this topic before and that the rumors were simply untrue. This isn't the first time Gunn has had to play myth-buster; he's previously debunked false reports about The Brave and the Bold and even a potential Teen Titans adaptation.
What to Expect from Blue Beetle
The upcoming animated series will follow Jaime Reyes, the teenage hero who bonds with an alien scarab to become Blue Beetle. The character first made his live-action debut in the 2023 film, which starred Xolo Maridueña as the titular hero. The movie also featured Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, Raoul Trujillo as Ignacio Carapax, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, and Becky G as the voice of Khaji-Da, the sentient scarab that grants Jaime his powers.
While the live-action film didn't exactly set the box office on fire, it still managed to gross over $130 million worldwide and earned solid reviews, with a 78% critics' score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. That positive reception likely played a role in keeping the animated series on track.
Details about the animated show's plot and full voice cast remain under wraps, but Maridueña is confirmed to reprise his role as Jaime Reyes. Additionally, fans can look forward to seeing Maridueña return as Blue Beetle in the upcoming DC film Man of Tomorrow, which will pit Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) against the cosmic threat Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
As for the animated series, no release date has been announced yet. In the meantime, you can stream the live-action Blue Beetle on HBO Max. For more updates on this and other DC projects, stay tuned to ShowtimeSpot.
