Prime Video is doubling down on its historical epic ambitions with Bloodaxe, a series poised to fill the void left by Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla. The streamer has just revealed a wave of new casting for the show's second season, which is already in production ahead of its 2027 debut.
According to an official press release, Gard Løkke has been tapped as a series regular for Season 2, while Melina Åkerman, Kieran Bew, Sebastian Bull, and George Burgess will appear in recurring roles. The new additions join a cast led by Xavier Molyneux as Erik Bloodaxe and Jessica Madsen as Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. Filming is currently underway in Ireland, with a possible release as early as late 2027, though a Q1 2028 premiere is also on the table.
Created, written, and executive produced by Michael and Horatio Hirst, Bloodaxe chronicles the rise of Erik Bloodaxe, a legendary Norse raider, and his formidable wife Gunnhild. The series is set against the backdrop of a Norway torn apart by rival factions, shifting loyalties, and bloody betrayals, as war looms and chaos engulfs the kingdom. The official synopsis promises a "thundering, cataclysmic, compelling, and utterly magical new Norse saga."
Michael Hirst is no stranger to the genre, having served as a lead writer on Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla, and Billy the Kid. His return to the Norse world with Bloodaxe has generated significant buzz, especially given Prime Video's recent track record with action-packed series like Chris Pratt's The Terminal List Season 2, which is set for an October 2026 return.
Prime Video has already renewed Bloodaxe for a second season before the first even premieres, a strong vote of confidence in the project.
