The clock is ticking on the next James Bond movie, and while fans are still guessing who'll step into 007's polished shoes, one familiar face has already bowed out. Ben Whishaw, who played MI6's gadget guru Q in Daniel Craig's final three outings, has confirmed he won't be part of Denis Villeneuve's upcoming reboot.
In a chat with The Sunday Times, Whishaw explained that the Bond franchise needs a major shake-up after Craig's era came to a close. "The world has changed so much since the last Bond film so you have to find what is relevant about it," he said. "I think it needs to be reinvented completely. But it's not for me to say."
Whishaw first slipped into Q's lab coat for 2012's Skyfall, then returned for Spectre and No Time to Die. His take on the character—a younger, tech-savvy quartermaster—was a fresh spin compared to the classic portrayals by Desmond Llewelyn and John Cleese, and it quickly became a fan favorite.
With Whishaw out, the question of who else might return—or not—adds another layer of intrigue to the reboot. Villeneuve, known for Dune and Blade Runner 2049, is set to direct, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight penning the script. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are on board, but Amazon MGM Studios has yet to announce the new Bond. Names like Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, and Josh O'Connor have been floated—though Lowden has already brushed off the speculation.
Whishaw also opened up about the secrecy that surrounds Bond productions, calling it part of the fun. "People go crazy about it. It's all deliberate hype," he said. "When you are working on it, it's incredibly secretive, almost like being a spy. You only get the pages of the script that you are in. It's a ploy to create suspense and glamour, but it's kind of fun."
The next Bond film is still in development, with no title, cast, or release date confirmed. As the franchise gears up for a fresh start, fans can only speculate about what Villeneuve's vision will bring—and whether any familiar faces will pop up. For now, Whishaw's exit marks a clear break from the Craig era, signaling that the reboot is truly starting from scratch.
While Bond fans wait for official news, there's plenty to keep them busy—like checking out the latest trailer for The Liberation or catching up on the rumored X-Men reboot casting. But for now, the Bond machine is humming, and Whishaw's comments only add to the anticipation.
