Tim Downie, the actor behind Baldur's Gate 3's beloved wizard Gale of Waterdeep, recently shared a hilarious and revealing story: he had no idea his character could be romanced until he showed up to record those very scenes. Downie made the revelation during a panel at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention alongside narrator Amelia Tyler, moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt.
For Downie, Baldur's Gate 3 was his first video game role, and he entered the project with minimal information. He wasn't even told the game's title or his character's name initially. Instead, he pieced together Gale's personality from scripts over months of recording. It took about six months before he felt comfortable in the role, and a year and a half passed before anyone mentioned the game's romance system. "I think a lot of people just assumed I knew," Downie recalled.
The surprise came on a routine Wednesday session when he was told he'd be recording romance scenes. Downie initially thought that meant light flirting, but he soon learned he'd be performing intimate motion capture alone, without a scene partner. He described it as a "baptism by fire." That first day turned into three sessions totaling roughly 12 hours of recording. The awkwardness was palpable: performing intimate scenes solo while a sound engineer watched from the booth. By the end, Downie joked that he and the engineer could barely make eye contact.
One session was interrupted by a fire alarm, forcing Downie to stand outside on an East London street in his motion capture suit—a moment he found particularly exposing. Despite the challenges, Downie's experience highlights how Baldur's Gate 3's performers often discovered the game's depth organically. For fans, Gale's romantic side has been a major draw. Downie even shared that an actor friend once left him a voicemail confessing to spending two months romancing Gale in-game. Downie himself hasn't played Baldur's Gate 3 yet, but when he does, he knows exactly what he'll do: romance Gale.
