It's been a whirlwind year for Avatar: The Last Airbender fans, but the clouds are finally parting. Paramount+ has officially moved up the release of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender to July 25 and released the first trailer, giving us our best look yet at the animated sequel.
The news comes after a rocky few months. Earlier this year, a leaked version of the film spread online, prompting a swift takedown by Paramount. Then, the studio announced the movie would skip theaters entirely and debut straight on streaming, which disappointed some fans. But the new July date—earlier than the original October plan—is a welcome surprise.
According to the official synopsis, the story picks up with Aang, the last Airbender, who learns of an ancient power that could preserve his endangered culture. With Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko by his side, he races to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens the hard-won peace.
The voice cast is stacked: Eric Nam leads as Aang, Dave Bautista voices the new character Tagah, Jessica Matten plays Katara, Román Zaragoza is Sokka, Steven Yeun voices Zuko, and Dionne Quan returns as Toph. Lauren Montgomery directs, with original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino producing.
This isn't the only big news for the franchise. Netflix's live-action adaptation recently wrapped production on its third season, despite a drop in viewership from season one to two. Meanwhile, Paramount Game Studios put its ambitious Avatar RPG on hold indefinitely. But for now, fans have a concrete date to circle on their calendars.
