Adam Scott, best known for his role in Severance, is diving back into horror with Neon's Hokum, a folk horror film that promises to leave audiences screaming. At CinemaCon 2026, Scott sat down with Collider to discuss his love for the genre, what makes Hokum so uniquely terrifying, and even shared some of his favorite films—including a controversial pick from Martin Scorsese.
Adam Scott Defends His 'Controversial' Scorsese Favorite
When asked about his favorite Scorsese film, Scott didn't hesitate to name The Irishman, a choice he admits is controversial. 'I think it's a masterpiece,' he said. 'I saw it in a movie theater at the Egyptian in LA, and then I went back the next day and saw it again.' He emphasized the importance of watching the three-and-a-half-hour epic in one sitting, noting that viewing it in chunks at home can devalue the experience.
Scott also shared his top picks from other legendary directors: Christopher Nolan's Inception, Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, though he also praised Barry Lyndon as a personal favorite.
What Makes Hokum So Uniquely Terrifying
Written and directed by Damian McCarthy (Oddity), Hokum follows author Ohm Bauman (Scott) as he travels to a secluded Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes. What begins as a personal retreat quickly turns sinister when folktales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite lead to a shocking disappearance. Scott explained that McCarthy's character-driven approach sets Hokum apart from typical horror films. 'He's making character-driven horror films, so you're emotionally involved. By the time the scares come, you're already invested,' Scott said. 'This movie is uniquely terrifying.'
Scott, a self-proclaimed horror fanatic, grew up in the '80s, a golden era for the genre with classics like The Thing, Poltergeist, and The Shining. He recalled the thrill of seeing Hereditary in theaters, an experience he described as incredible. For fans of folk horror, Hokum promises to deliver a fresh, emotionally gripping scare.
Severance Season 3: What to Expect
Scott also teased the upcoming third season of Severance, confirming that filming will begin soon. 'It's going to be great,' he said, though he remained tight-lipped about specifics. 'We don't want to give anything away.' He assured fans that the cast and crew are eager to return, especially after the two-year gap since Season 2 wrapped. 'Everyone's raring to go,' he added.
