Just as HBO’s latest trip to Westeros is winning hearts, the next chapter is already fighting through production chaos. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms quickly became a fan favorite for its intimate tale of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, proving that George R.R. Martin’s world still has plenty of stories to tell. Now, showrunner Ira Parker has offered an encouraging—and surprisingly candid—update on Season 2, revealing that the production has been plagued by Mother Nature’s worst tantrums.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Parker confirmed that Season 2 is in its final weeks of filming and remains on track for a premiere in the first half of 2027. The series stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. After shooting Season 1 in rainy Northern Ireland, the team moved to sunny Spain to adapt Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella, The Sworn Sword. But in a cruel twist of fate, severe flooding in the Canary Islands repeatedly halted production. “Season two has been a f*cking bastard,” Parker admitted. “The place we chose to shoot our drought in got a once-in-a-100-year storm… We got flooded. There were national emergencies. We had to put the crew on hiatus.”
Despite the setbacks, Parker revealed that Martin has remained deeply involved—and even supplied unpublished material. “He gave me some unpublished pages—actual written prose he found in his files somewhere that he sent over, and we used them. For the deep super fans, we got some extra stuff that—as far as George’s filing cabinets are concerned—is canon.” While fans may groan that this means more material that isn’t The Winds of Winter, it’s a treat for Dunk and Egg devotees.
Parker also shared his long-term vision for the series. He plans to adapt all of Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, then potentially pause the show and return years later when Ansell has naturally aged into an older Egg. “Book four, which George is working on, takes place in a very cool location. And five is the last story point of Egg as a boy,” Parker explained. “So it’s a very natural ending place for us to take a break and come back when Dexter is older. Dexter is our Egg. Or, at least, Dexter is my Egg.” He dismissed any notion of recasting the role, which will warm fans’ hearts.
For those hungry for more Westeros, House of the Dragon Season 3 is also on the horizon, promising to delve into Harrenhal’s bloody past. And if you’re looking for something completely different, The Rookie Season 9 is set to start filming in July 2026 ahead of its 2027 return.
