Netflix's ambitious sci-fi series 3 Body Problem is gearing up for its final chapter, with production on Season 3 slated to begin in July 2026. According to a new report from What's on Netflix, filming will run through December, targeting a 2027 release for the concluding installment of the adaptation of Liu Cixin's acclaimed novel trilogy.

The update comes as Season 2—which wrapped production in February 2026—is expected to premiere later this year. Both seasons were ordered together shortly after the show's debut, a rare vote of confidence from the streamer that underscored its commitment to the franchise. While 3 Body Problem never quite reached the cultural ubiquity of Stranger Things, it earned strong reviews and multiple Emmy nominations, solidifying its place as one of Netflix's most intellectually ambitious offerings.

A Shorter but Tighter Finale

Fans have expressed concern over the reduced episode count for the final two seasons, which together will total just 11 episodes. Season 3 is reportedly only five episodes long, raising questions about pacing—especially given the complexity of the source material. However, the creative team is approaching the two seasons as one continuous narrative, shooting them back-to-back to ensure a smoother transition and stronger momentum. This strategy mirrors the approach taken by other prestige dramas and could help avoid the pacing pitfalls that plagued later seasons of Game of Thrones, which was co-created by 3 Body Problem showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

What's Coming in Season 2

Season 2 will adapt The Dark Forest, the second book in the trilogy and widely considered the strongest of the three. Star Eiza González recently teased the season's scale and emotional weight, telling Collider that it was this part of the story that convinced her to join the series. “Season 1's a good season, but... Dark Forest is the strongest book of them all, and this season really dives into that whole narrative,” she said.

With the back-to-back production plan, the gap between Seasons 2 and 3 should be significantly shorter than the wait between Season 1 and 2. Netflix has not yet announced an official premiere date for Season 2, but an update is expected soon.
